A Teachable Heart

Why teachable heart? Well, why not?
1 Samuel 15:23a
"For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry."
"Sebab pendurhakaan adalah sama seperti dosa bertenung dan kedegilan adalah sama seperti menyembah berhala dan terafim."
The verse showed us that stubborness and presumption equals to idolatry, so we can conclude that God hates stubborness! And we shouldn't keep being stubborn against God..

Teachable heart means how our heart response to the Word of God, and The Parable of The Sower is a good practice of it. From the story, we can evaluate our heart into four levels of quality. So let's start, shall we?
1. Seed on the side way (Luke 8:12)
"then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved."
"kemudian datanglah Iblis lalu mengambil firman itu dari dalam hati mereka, supaya mereka jangan percaya dan diselamatkan."
The verse tells us that unbelieveness may lead us to condemnation, eternal judgement, a life without salvation. This is the first level/quality of a teachable heart, where we personally won't accept or even deny the Word of God in our life. Furthermore, there are several traps of devil on how to keep us from living a godly life.
First, we are deceived to believe that God doesn't exist. There is no God or demon, there is no heaven or hell.. *this represents the atheists. Secondly, we are deceived to believe many kinds of teachings and accept them as truth as long as they "look good" or they are generally accepted.. so that we don't actually understand what The Truth is.
There are many more traps that I cannot mention here could lead us to the degradation of our heart's quality. And in the end, we are forced to loose our salvation by all means.

2. Seed on rocks (Mark 4:17)
"when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away."
"Apabila kemudian datang penindasan atau penganiayaan karena firman itu, mereka segera murtad."
The verse represents believers that doesn't endure the persecution related with The Word. They become weak and then easily giving up when things doesn't go as expected, when situation become worse, when pains and sorrows come into their life.
After making decision of living a life according to God's Word, we might suddenly loosing our customers, or sales starts to fall down, business goes bad.. Or even worse, we get caught by diseases we never imagined to happen. When those things come, do we still keep the Word in our heart? or do we decide to give it up?
There is this one big question of all time, "Why do wicked and ungodly people lives a good or even better life?" *Sorry, but I won't answer this question in this sharing

3. Seed on thorns (Luke 8:14)
"they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature."
"mereka terhimpit oleh kekuatiran dan kekayaan dan kenikmatan hidup, sehingga mereka tidak menghasilkan buah yang matang."
At the parallel verse, Mark 4:19, it mentions the words "deceitfulness of riches". On this level, many Christians falls into devil's trap. We think that blessing the Bible promised, is always about money. In fact, not all money comes with blessing..
So we failed to recognize grey areas in our life, and leads to the wrong decisions in business, relationship, ministry, and other areas in our life. Those wrong decisions, of course, stops us from bearing a ripe fruits.. So the Word does bear fruits, but not yet ripe?! And yet, this is not the quality God wanted us to have.

4. Seed on good soil (Luk 8:15)
"hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience."
"menyimpannya dalam hati yang baik dan mengeluarkan buah dalam ketekunan."
I'd like to show you something interesting to me about the word "honest and good" used on this verse. The word "honest" was taken from the Greek word "kalos", while "good" was taken from the Greek word "aghatos". Both words have similar meaning, but the word "kalos" contains richer meaning.
The word "kalos" means beautiful, excellent, admirable, honorable, noble, praiseworhty, precious, competent.. in short, beautiful but with quality!
This, fully represents a true quality of teachable heart. A heart where The Words of God bear ripe fruits, and thus a fruitful life!

So, those are the 4 levels of a teachable heart. But how actually we develop a teachable heart God wanted us to have?
1. First, put on and develop humility (Collosians 3:12)
"Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,"
"kenakanlah belas kasihan, kemurahan, kerendahan hati, kelemahlembutan dan kesabaran."
Never fall into the traps of self-pride, and even sometimes Christians most likely to aim for a certain position in church, cell groups, ministries, or communities. This is corresponding with what Paul told to the people of Philippians at Philippians 2:3,
"Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves."
"dengan tidak mencari kepentingan sendiri atau puji-pujian yang sia-sia. Sebaliknya hendaklah dengan rendah hati yang seorang menganggap yang lain lebih utama dari pada dirinya sendiri;"
2. Mind your feeds to the heart (Philippians 4:8)
"Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
"Jadi akhirnya, saudara-saudara, semua yang benar, semua yang mulia, semua yang adil, semua yang suci, semua yang manis, semua yang sedap didengar, semua yang disebut kebajikan dan patut dipuji, pikirkanlah semuanya itu."
This verse similarly talks about the word "kalos" as described before. So this should put us into practice, mind of what you see and what you hear, for our eyes and ears are the gate into our heart.
I would personally advice you to avoid movies that promote violence, horrors, or doesn't shows good values, choose wisely of soap operas or TV series, and also avoid gossips shows or celebrities news. Furthermore, choose to read good and educating news and not unimportant ones such as hoax and so on..
3. Surround yourself with godly people, who live in the fear of The Lord (Psalms 1:1)
"who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;"
"tidak berjalan menurut nasihat orang fasik, yang tidak berdiri di jalan orang berdosa, dan yang tidak duduk dalam kumpulan pencemooh,"
Advancing from point number 2, we need to create a "healthy" environment that will nurture our heart to bear a fruitful life.. Choose what kind of people you would listen to, choose what kind of people you would work with, choose what kind of people you would live with.
Good and healthy environment will help us grow and develop our heart and our life. So, on this point, I would encourage you to join healthy communities, interact with people with good life values, listen to the godly men who really care to grow and help us..

Well, we have reach the end of my sharing about a teachable heart.. 'Til we meet again :)

Live The Truth, be a happy Christian
